The graduate degree programs described herein lead to masters of Science supported by a joint effort of universities and engineer schools (“Grandes Ecoles”) within a federation “Education for science of fusion and hot plasmas”. This federation gathers high education partners located on four geographical sites in France (Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nancy) which are jointly involved in providing a teaching based on plasmas and associated technologies. Its is aimed to provide interdisciplinary knowledge and skills, for preparing high-level scientists and engineers, from France and foreign countries, keen on studying in plasma research, energy and fusion research programs, specifically within the framework of large projects, both in national or private laboratories.
The whole set of the master’s programs deals with all the scientific and technological fields related to the ionized media via theory, modelling and simulation and hands-on session on research-like facilities and offers interdisciplinary courses on all kind of plasmas, materials under irradiation, cryotechnology and superconductivity, microwave/laser high heating and instrumentation in extreme environments.

The curricula are one year long : the university term begins at mid-september with one week of visits/conferences on s Bordeaux, Cadarache and Saclay sites. The courses are held in parallel in the four sites, except during the month of February, when the courses take place nearby the large facilities in Cadarache, in Bordeaux or in Geneva depending of the chosen pathway. The academic term completes with a mentored research internship during 5-6 months with oral defence at mid-September examined by a national examiner board, in Cadarache or in Bordeaux or in Saclay.
Teaching is given in French but is given in English if one non-French speaking student is attending the class. In practice, that means that the course material (the handout) and/or the oral teaching are provided in English. During the winter gathering of students in Cadarache or Geneva, the whole set of courses are taught in English. As to the mentored research activity during the 5-6 months of internship held in a lab, the daylife is organized in French or English and depends only on the student/supervisor pair interaction. The deliverables of the internship, namely the written report and the oral defence, can be held in French or English, depending on which language the student is most comfortable speaking.
At European scale, several education actions related to the ITER project have been initiated at Master level with relation with the master’s progamme SFP and at PhD level as well:
- the European master’s programme Fusion-EP, jointly supported by UL, AMU and INSTN along with Universiteit Ghent (Belgium, coordinator), Universität Stuttgart (Germany), Universidad Carlos III and Universidad complutense in Madrid (Spain); this two-year master’s programme started in 2006 within the Erasmus mundus framework is proposed again sinceSeptember 2017 with two paths Science of fusion et Engineering of fusion. A student attending its third semester in France (during its two year programme, the student has to pass through three different partner institutions in two different European countries at least) will share the same curriculum that the students attending the M2 SFP programme in Marseille or Nancy;
- the doctoral college Erasmus mundus Fusion-DC, supported by a consortium with three french partners (UL, CEA, AMU);
- the FUSENET association (which stands for FUSion Education NETwork) which coordinates all the education activities related to magnetic confinement fusion over Europe;
- the EUROFUSION consortium based on the roadmap to the realisation of fusion energy.
At European scale as well, a new programme has been initiated at Master level with relation with the above-mentionned master’s progamme GI-PLATO and at PhD level:
- the European master’s programme Lascala coined for Large scale lasers and accelerators, jointly supported by University Paris-Saclay (France, coordinator) along with University La Sapienza (Italy), University of Szeged (Hungaria); this two-year master’s programme will start in 2021 with the pathwayy General physics in Paris-Saclay. A student attending its third semester in France will share the same curriculum that the students attending the M2 GI-PLATO programme;
